Feeling sick when you’re an HVAC technician is awful

It’s miserable when you arrive at a “simple diagnostic appointment” and wind up servicing their entire broken HVAC system with a blaring migraine

I’m sure it goes without saying that being sick when you have to work is the absolute worst. It really doesn’t matter what kind of job you have, because there isn’t a single task that feels enjoyable when you are under the weather. Whenever I’m sick, the only thing that I want is to lay down in my bed and wait for the world to feel better. I never want to stare at a computer, talk to customers on the phone, or worry about attending meetings all day long. Luckily, I don’t normally have to do any of those tasks at my job… But I can’t say that performing residential HVAC repair jobs is fun when you’re feeling ill, either. In fact, some of my worst days as an air quality control specialist have been caused by an upset stomach or a persistent respiratory problem complicating my repair appointment. The air quality control industry definitely isn’t a line of work that allows you to take a break. It’s uncomfortable when you are in someone’s basement, desperately trying to figure out what’s wrong with their furnace and all you want to do is sleep. It’s miserable when you arrive at a “simple diagnostic appointment” and wind up servicing their entire broken HVAC system with a blaring migraine. It’s even worse when you’re repairing busted ductwork in an attic and continually fighting the urge to vomit all over their insulation. I can’t tell you how many broken ventilation fans I’ve diagnosed from the toilet, but I can assure you that I’m highly committed to my job as an HVAC technician. I just wish I didn’t get sick so often.
