I certainly don’t miss those days and I have no regrets about leaving the corporate world to strike out on my own
For many years I simply hated my job. It wasn’t the work necessarily, it was dealing with a boss that controlled my every waking moment while I was there. I had to abide by his schedule for lunch, vacation, and even overtime but now I am free of all of that. As a designer I wanted to be in control of my own schedule and build my own client base. I took a chance and became a freelance designer and I will admit that the first year was tough. I had to take just about any job I could find and many of them were more work than I anticipated. I built my reputation and now, three years later, I can support myself and I am in complete control over my hours and lifestyle. One of the things I love most about my job is the fact that I have a home office where I can set my temperature to my liking. The old boss I had never turned on the air conditioner until it was nearly ninety outside and we would sit in our cubicles sweating to death while trying to do our jobs. If we would ask to take a break to get some fresh air he would tell us that it wasn’t time for our scheduled break and we would just have to deal with it. I certainly don’t miss those days and I have no regrets about leaving the corporate world to strike out on my own. I love my job again and that is what is most important. I work in a comfortable setting and never have to ask for a break again.
